The Unseen Movie Review: Drillbit Taylor

The one person I thought of when I saw Owen Wilson up close was Donald Trump. Owen may look like he just climbed out of bed but upon closer inspection you’ll notice that his hair contains more product than Dee Snider’s drain after a shower. Like The Donald, it would take an act of God not seen since the ten plagues to move Owen’s hair.

Owen is a very funny and gifted guy. He is able to toss off quips like Pee Wee Herman in a movie theater and can volley the comedic banter like a plate spinner strung out on No Doz. So it would seem that his new film Drillbit Taylor would be a perfect vehicle to show off that laid back humor. The only problem is that all anyone will be talking about during the film’s release will be Owen’s suicide struggle a few months back. Although it never was confirmed that he tried to commit suicide, I’m going by the rule of Hollywood which states that if it’s a rumor, there’s usually some truth to it somewhere. Just take a look at The National Enquirer reporting that Patrick Swayze had five weeks to live. After his stay in the hospital, Owen has been trying to make a comeback and show that he’s healthy. He did a short interview with Wes Anderson for My Space and also showed up at the Academy Awards wearing a tuxedo with his fly done up to the top. But be honest, as soon as he stepped out on stage all you could think of was how healthy he looked after trying to kill himself. The film itself looks like a movie run through the spin cycle with extra soap from the Apatow factory. Judd produced the movie, and Seth Rogen had a hand in writing it. Last summer Apatow could do no wrong, in fact he even admitted hiring high priced call girls and they still offered him the Governorship of New York. But now it seems as though the studio is shrinking from using Judd’s name to sell the movie (I haven’t seen it in commercials but they did mention Superbad and Knocked Up in the trailer). Maybe it has something to do with the failure of Dewey Cox, or maybe the film isn’t raunchy enough to earn it a true Apatow stamp. For some reason I think of Judd as the Don Corleone of film comedy. He sits in his big chair, listens to a pitch, asks if the writer or actor has been spending time with his family, then calls the studio and greenlights the film.The trailer for the film has some funny moments including the one about Mexican Judo, but I think most comedies (with the exception of any film starring Chris Kattan) should have enough funny moments to cut a decent trailer. I’ll be waiting a few weeks on this film. If the reviews are great and the box office takes off I think I’ll call up the babysitter, bargain her down from $10/ hour to $9/ hour and then take the wife out for a romantic date of Drillbit Taylor and Dairy Queen. It’s hard to believe we’ve been married for five years, but the spark is still there.
