Smith and Mostow commit to superheroes

Terminator 3’ director Jonathan Mostow and jiggy with it actor Will Smith are about to enter the superhero genre. They’ve officially committed to working together on the movie ‘Tonight He Comes’ for Columbia Pictures, according to Warner Bros, according to Variety.

The movie stars Smith as a disaffected superhero facing a mid-life crisis. He crash lands in a small town and romances a local housewife in an attempt to revitalize himself. Smith, like Nic Cage, has long toyed with the idea of playing a superhero, and now he’s getting his chance to wear a cape.

It’s an odd time to start developing another superhero movie though, especially one that isn’t already tied to some existing comic property, and thus has a built in fanbase. The movie market is nearing the superhero saturation point, and audience interest is waning.

But this is a script that’s been hanging around in development hell for awhile. ’Tonight He Comes’ was originally written by Vincent Ngo, and has since been rewritten by Vince Gilligan. Akiva Goldsman and Michael Mann are producing the movie, and it was they who dusted off the idea and got it moving again.

Will Smith is just coming off one of 2005’s few box office successes, the romantic comedy ‘Hitch’. He’s also filming another movie for Columbia, a drama called ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ with Thandie Newton.

Jonathan Mostow has been deluged with offers since his surprisingly great work on ‘Terminator 3’. He’s currently planning a fourth Terminator movie as well as a remake of ‘Swiss Family Robinson’, but both projects will have to be put on hold so he can jump right in to the superhero business with the Fresh Prince. He’ll also have to hold off on another project, something called ‘Reel Steel’, a futuristic movie about boxing robots. Think of it as a big screen version of Rockem Sockem Robots.
