Star Wars returns to theaters with new animated feature

Star Wars fans get ready. The saga is set to continue with the release of Star Wars: The Clone Wars – a 3-D animated film hitting theaters in August before making its way to television in the fall. Following the film’s release, the story will continue on television.This film won’t be distributed by Fox, but will feature a new partnership with Lucasfilm, Warner Bros. Pictures and Turner Broadcasting. Variety reports the August 15th release of the film will premiere the new animated series which will make its way to Cartoon Network and airings on TNT. The release dates for international theaters and television series are still being set.The new series is an expansion on the earlier “Clone Wars” micro-series that aired on Cartoon Network and was released on DVD by Fox – which has distributed every Star Wars theatrical release since 1977.The animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie runs around 100 minutes and is set between episode II and III with Anakin Skywalker not yet taking on the mantle of Darth Vader. Following the film’s release, the story will continue in 30-minute episodes on television.In Variety George Lucas (who serves as executive producer on the project) stated he wanted to return to the Star Wars universe because he “felt there were a lot more 'Star Wars' stories left to tell." The show will use new voice actors for the series’ characters, but will feature Anthony Daniels as C3PO and Matthew Wood as General Grievous and the battledroids. Dave Filoni is the director and Henry Gilroy, Scott Murphy and Steven Melching worked as writers on the project. Catherine Winder is producer.Lucasfilm Animation has reportedly produced more than 30 episodes for the new series with production continuing in Singapore and Taiwan. The company is also set to launch a new online documentary about the project at Starwars.com.
